Hon. Paul Martin the twenty-first Prime Minister of Canada;
Canadian Minister of Finance (1993 to 2002); Mr. Martin is an initiate of Psi
Upsilon Fraternity, U of T's Nu Chapter 1961. He earned his B.A. (history and
philosophy) from St. Michael's College at U of T in 1961.
Rt.
Hon. Lester B. Pearson, former Prime Minister of Canada, was initiated
in Delta Upsilon's Toronto Chapter in 1919. As most Canadians know, this DU
is a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
Rt. Hon. William
Lyon Mackenzie King, former Prime Minister of Canada and Vice President
of the League of Nations was initiated in Kappa Alpha Society's VT Chapter in
1895. The Canadian $50 note portrait and watermark are of William Lyon Mackenzie
King, Canada's longest-serving prime minister.
Lt-Colonel
John A. McCrae, MD of Zeta Psi Fraternity's Theta Xi Chapter was initaited
in 1893. He is the esteemed author of the Remembrance Day poem "In Flanders Fields".
A verse of this ZY's famous poem is printed on the
Canadian $10 note.
Edward ("Ted") Rogers,
Sigma Chi of U of T's Beta Omega Chapter '56: CEO & founder of Rogers Cable.
The Rogers Centre, where the Toronto Argonauts CFL football team, and
the twice World Champions Toronto Blue Jays MLB baseball teams play, bears his
name. He is also the benefactor for the Rogers Communications Centre
and the recently established Edward S. Rogers Sr. Graduate School for Advanced
Communications at Ryerson University, in Toronto.
Hon.
Dr. Carolyn Bennett, MP, was appointed Minister of State (Public
Health) on December 12, 2003. She was first elected to the House of Commons in
the 1997 general election and was re-elected in 2000 and 2004 representing the
electoral district of St. Paul’s. This Member of Parliament is an initiate
of Alpha Gamma Delta's Tau Chapter (1968) at the University of Toronto.
Hon.
Barbara McDougall, former Secretary of State External Affairs.
She was MP for the riding of St. Paul’s from 1984-1993. This former Member
of Parliament is an initiate of Kappa Kappa Gamma's Beta Psi Chapter at the University
of Toronto.
Chief Justice Roy McMurtry is the Chief
Justice of Ontario. This Zeta Psi is also the former Canadian Commissioner to
England (1985-1988); the former Chairman of the Canadian Football League (CFL);
the namesake for Roy and Ria McMurtry Endowment Fund for Law Foundation of Ontario.
Mr. McMurtry of ZY's Theta Xi Chapter at the University
of Toronto is also the recipient of the Law Foundation of Ontario's lifetime achievement
award, the Guthrie Award.
George Ryerson Gardiner,
Sigma Chi of U of T's Beta Omega Chapter '39: Past President of Toronto Stock
Exchange; namesake for Gardiner Ceramic Museum in Toronto. He received
the Order of Canada and Order of Ontario. He was one of the famed Silver Seven,
the hockey committee that gained control of Maple Leaf Gardens in 1957.
Edna Cress Staebler, of Alpha Gamma
Delta's Tau Chapter at U of T was an author and journalist, as
well as the namesake for the Edna Staebler Creative Non-Fiction
Writing Award, given by Wilfrid Laurier University, the only such
award in Canada. Previous winners include Canadian novelist Wayson
Choy. Edna celebrated her 100th birthday in 2006 shortly before
passing away. Edna was the author of numerous publications including
the "Food That Really Schmecks" cookbook series. This
Alpha Gam wore the Order of Canada (1996).
Carly
Klassen, Delta Delta Delta of Toronto's Canada Alpha Chapter, can be
heard live from 2-7pm weekdays as a radio personality on Ottawa's classic rock
station Chez106FM with Jeff Brown. She formerly co-hosted the afternoon Kim
Mitchell and Carly Klassen Show with Canadian legendary rocker Kim Mitchell
for Toronto's Q107FM.
Janis Macky-Frayer,
an Alpha Omicron Pi of Toronto's Beta Tau Chapter, is CTV's Middle East Bureau
Chief and correspondant. She has hosted two television programs for the Women's
Television Network, has been a news writer for CTV National News, and has been
an announcer for CBC Radio. She is a Gemini-nominated journalist.
Foster
Hewitt was a member of Beta Theta Pi's U of T Theta Zeta Chapter (initiated
circa 1919). Canadian's everywhere know well the phrases he coined: "Hello,
hockey fans", and "he shoots, he scores!". Hewitt was a Canadian
radio announcer calling hockey games for more than 60 years. This BQP
was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as a founder in 1965. The Foster Hewitt Media Gondola of the Air Canada Centre is named for him. On October 25,
1972, he was made an Fellow of the Order of Canada, on the same night as John
P. Robarts (UWO DU) received the Companion
of the Order of Canada.
